Edek has just been caught smuggling food into the getto and has been taken away by the Nazi soldiers. Ruth is now left alone with Bronia. We imagined that we were Ruth, writing a letter to her Mother who she believes to be in Switzerland. We used inference to reflect on Ruth's feelings, thought and motives based on her actions and evidence from the text. Here are some of our favourites from each of the Literacy groups:
Joseph (the father in the story who has escaped from a Work Camp) has returned to Warsaw to find his wife and children gone. In Chapter 5 'The Railway', he hides out in the railway station waiting for a goods train so he can stow on board and hitch a ride to Switzerland, where his wife may be. We put ourselves in Joseph's shoes and visualised the dramatic scene, creating artwork to support us with our writing. We then wrote our own descriptions of that bleak and dismal scene. What do you think of the story so far?
